Sealing: From Matte Cast to Water-Resistant Finish

Sand, dust, then three thin coats — and how to tell when a cast is ready for sealer.

Seal only when the cast is truly dry — 24 to 48 hours after demoulding. Sand the rim at P2500, remove every trace of dust, then apply three thin coats 30 minutes apart; a full day later a drop of water should bead instead of soaking in. About 40 minutes of work spread across two days. Sealing a damp cast is what turns a surface cloudy.

Tutorial: Sealing a Finished Cast

Materials

  • 1 Polyurethane Surface Sealer 500 ml
  • Fine sandpaper and a lint-free cloth
  • A soft brush or a small roller

Steps

  1. 01

Wait until it is truly dry

Sealing a damp cast traps moisture and turns the surface cloudy within days.

  2. 02

    Sand and de-dust

Flatten the rim with P2500 (2000-grit), then wipe every trace of dust — sealer will lock powder into the surface.

  3. 03

    Apply three thin coats

Thin coats at 30-minute intervals beat one thick one: no runs, faster cure, deeper colour.

  4. 04

    Check the water test

After a full day, a drop of water should bead instead of soaking in.
